Expenses Claimed by Phil Woolas MP
In his years as our MP since 1997, Phil Woolas has never claimed money to improve his house.
He has never claimed for furnishings, for any TV (never mind an expensive one) or even to clear the moat!
He has never changed his designated second home.

The costs of providing effective services to the community they represent.
None of this money goes to the MP personally.
The main items paid for are:
- Administrative and office expenditure like renting an office and paying for office equipment like telephones and computers. Phil Woolas MP has an office in the centre of Oldham and also pay to run surgeries in local centres throughout our large constituency.
- The costs of employing staff to help provide an effective service to the local community – especially people who need help.
- Travel costs – particularly the cost of travelling to and from London each week. Phil’s wife and sons can also claim for a limited number of journeys between Oldham and London to help them have some family time together.
- Limited costs of sending information to constituents For example, Phil produces a newsletter, “Parliamentary News”, that goes to every home.
The personal costs of being an MP.
The allowance MPs get to pay for this is called Personal Additional Accommodation Expenditure.
Phil says “As Oldham is a long way from London, by far the biggest cost is the need to have a second home. This allowance is paid to me personally to reimburse me for the money I pay out.”
MPs can claim:
- The interest portion of payments made on a mortgage to buy a second home (or rent paid if the second home is rented).
- Hotel expenses if I need to stay in one to do my job.
- Utility bills in the second home – like council tax, electricity or telephone bill.
- Furnishings for the second home
- Costs of maintaining the second home – like repair bills and cleaning.
- The subsistence costs of living away from the main home.
